Local Church Holds Benefit Concert for Wes Leonard Heart Team
Posted: Jul 25, 2011

Holland, MI – East Saugatuck Church will be hosting a benefit concert, auction, and pig roast to raise money for the Wes Leonard Heart Team – a foundation created in memory of Wes Leonard – the Fennville High School basketball player who died of Sudden Cardiac Arrest just after scoring a game-winning layup to help his team clinch a perfect season.   Wes was a two-sport standout in football and basketball at Fennville High School.  All money collected at this event will be given to the Heart Team to continue their mission to ensure every youth athletic facility has an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) available and trained individuals to use it.

Saturday, August 6, East Saugatuck Church will be rocking the house or church in this case with four local bands performing on stage - Nimrots, Lomax Big House, Black Ice and ES Point Band (East Saugatuck Church’s own band). In between bands, the benefit auctions will take place with merchandise donated from local area merchants ranging from $25 gift cards, a cruise for two on The Star of Saugatuck,  to a pontoon boat rental (valued at $140) from Big Lake Outfitters. The entire auction list can be found at (as of July 30). Members from the Heart Team will also be onsite giving information and demonstrations on AEDs and their life saving abilities. The benefit will begin at 5:00 p.m. with music playing until 10:00 p.m.

“Our church, like the rest of the community was devastated by the loss of Wes. When we learned of The Wes Leonard Heart Team, we knew we needed to do something to advance their cause, and to try to prevent this from happening again, and to give other kids a chance at “just one more game”.  We think this concert, auction and dinner is a great way to celebrate Wes’ life, raise money for this cause, and bring awareness to the importance of AEDs. We hope everyone comes out and shows their support at this great event”, says Pastor Gary Luurtsema from East Saugatuck Church.

This is a FREE EVENT to the entire community with no admission charge. All donations will go directly to the Wes Leonard Heart Team. East Saugatuck Church is located at 3815 56th Street, Holland, MI.
